It serves as the first ever streetcar route to the Berkeley Riverfront — unlike other streetcar lines across the city, which were rebuilt on existing routes that were originally constructed in the late 1800’s.
This project was unique in that it runs parallel and in close proximity to our streetcar extension project. The implementation of this bridge was a significant economic driver for the development of Berkeley Riverfront, as it provides increased access to the already popular and continually expanding district.
It involved transforming the corridor from a three-lane roadway to a two-lane facility, with a 10-foot multi-use pathway and a five-foot sidewalk. Additionally, all overhead utilities were relocated into an underground duct bank system, and a roundabout was incorporated to improve traffic management.
It entailed widened roadways, reimagined intersections, curbs and gutters, new streetlights, dedicated bike lanes, a 10-foot-wide recreational path, and sidewalks connecting neighborhoods to the local elementary school.
The project scope included reconstructed roadway, parking lot modifications, pedestrian accommodations, a water main replacement, an extension of the Trolley Track Trail, as well as a new sidewalk, LED streetlights, and interconnected signals.
The new bridges have greatly enhanced the safety and capacity of drivers along this high-traffic section of Route 13 that carries approximately 16,000 vehicles daily. The total length of the project was 3.7 miles. It entailed demolition, site work, paving, and new bridge construction.
Spanning the NE side of I-29, the aim of this path is to enhance accessibility in the Northland by connecting pathways and improving safety for bikers and pedestrians.
The improvements include replacing the bridges at Wornall and Holmes, rehabilitating the bridges
at 104th Street and the Blue River, and adding another lane to I-435. Additional improvements include removing the loop ramps at the Holmes Road interchange, 12-foot inside shoulders along I-435, increased vertical clearance under the Wornall Road bridge, a taller and safer concrete barrier wall, and longer merge lanes in critical locations. The project also included more than a half mile of pedestrian facilities spanning three arterial intersections, as well as both open and closed drainage design throughout the entire project corridor.
